Plaza Santa María is one of the most harmonious squares if all the fortified towns in Europe. The medieval-style restaurant Mesón del Cid is situated in one of its corners, a privileged location opposite the Burgos Cathedral. It was here, at the end of 15th century, where Master Fabrique Alemán de Basilea, a follower of Gütemberg, set up his own printing business.
The works printed here include an incunable kept in the Spanish Monarchs library and the Spanish Grammar written by Andrés Gutiérrez de Cerezo, dated 1485. Also, the first edition of the Spanish classical novel La Celestina (1499) was printed here.
With this cultural wealth as a starting point, the López de Alzaga family has recently restored the building facade, with a great deal of care, and uncovered part of the original walls built in 15th century. Modifying the family’s rotisserie business, both the building and the restaurant are now models of Castilian gastronomy and accomodation in this monumental town. This was achieved without altering the aesthetic appeal of the premises nor changing the delicious and traditional gastronomic offer.
The refined simplicity observed in and around Mesón del Cid can be tasted in the specialties prepared by Mª Luísa, Pepín López Alzaga and their children, all of which highlight the superior-quality local ingredients which have put Burgos on the Spanish gastronomic map.
